What is Semrush Site Health and why should I use it?

Whether you are an agent, a freelancer, or an insider, communication is very important for SEO.

How do you ensure that everyone is on the same page and know the priority and overall status of website optimization?

enter On-site health — Semrush indicators, which can quickly measure any website, are easy to understand, and are based on the most important technical factors that affect website performance.

Why use this score? A few quick reasons:

  • Communication: clear and easy to understand
  • Placement: You can use it to display offers and win new customers
  • Competitor analysis/comparison: It can help you compare the SEO pages of a website to guide competitors in the same market segment
  • Monitoring: very suitable for tracking changes over a period of time

SEO work may take weeks or months to see any significant results of SERP.

Website health can communicate your work more directly.

Especially when an experienced SEO is working with someone who is completely unfamiliar with SEO, you need something that both parties understand.

If you want to conduct a quick review of a customer’s site, you can provide its site health score and a list of the most important issues and areas that need improvement within a few minutes.

The score can also be used for competitor analysis-compare the health of your site and problems between competitors, and make long-term comparisons-to track progress over a period of time.

Semrush tip: Two other indicators useful for marketing and monitoring are authority score and toxicity score.

To paint a picture, you can say that technical SEO is the foundation of any SEO strategy.

Every house needs a solid foundation, and taller houses need a better foundation. The same can be said for websites.

With Site Health, you are measuring the stability of your site’s foundation-gaining a stronger foundation will only help any other effort to build the site.

Let’s discuss the meaning of scores in more detail.

How to calculate site health

When you run a website audit, the Semrush robot will crawl the website according to your parameters and check more than 150 common website issues ( View the full list here).

The site health is calculated based on the problems found by Semrush during its crawling process.

These problems are mainly divided into three categories:

  • Mistake -The most influential issue that should be addressed first.
  • warning -Problems with medium impact should be resolved, but not as urgent as errors.
  • Notice -Not dangerous, but an important example to be aware of.

Errors that are more dangerous than other warnings (for example, broken internal links) contribute more to your site’s health score.

Notifications (such as external links with nofollow attributes) will not affect the score at all, because they usually do not indicate any errors, but they are included to give you a full understanding of the basics of the website.

Critical issues damage the overall health of the website

Note that not all errors and warnings have the same weight. Generally, the more harmful the error is to the site, the greater the impact on the site’s health score.

Therefore, in some cases, the impact of a specific warning may be 10 times weaker than a specific error.

Examples of key issues include:

  • Sitemap, specification and page in hreflang are incorrect. This may confuse search engines when deciding which page to display in the search.
  • Broken pages will generate broken links. You can use 301 redirects to redirect broken links, but if the site does not update the link, it means that users who follow the link will wait longer (until they are redirected to the desired page).

Again, during site migration, this may result in a redirect chain. This also weakens the signal of the site map and specifications.

There are more unique problems that can damage the health of the entire site

The more unique issues found per page, the lower the site health.

In short, the 10 unique trigger checks on the website should have more impact on the health value of the website than 10 in the same check.

Therefore, the 3,000 errors found in a 100-page crawl will have a greater impact on the health of the website than the same 3,000 errors found in a 10,000-page crawl.

This allows you to compare the technical quality of large sites and small sites more clearly.

Discuss site health with customers

Many people in SEO can have short, acronym-filled conversations about technical implementation and interesting concepts (such as YMYL, EAT, LSI, TTFB, etc.).

However, ordinary customers will want to hear what you are doing in simple language.

How does SEO improve the performance of my website? That’s what they want to know.

When attracting new customers or monitoring the progress of existing customers, “site health” is an ideal discussion point.

They can check the score to understand the overall situation, and you can know all the technical details behind the score, the reason for the change and what it means.

When you resolve the site’s problem and rerun the review, the score will increase.

Here are some good ways to use scores in communication:

  • Compare the SEO page of your client’s website with similar websites in the niche market
  • Calculate quotations to customers based on specific problems you can solve
  • Increase transparency for you SEO report By including scores regularly

Site health as a comparative indicator

One awesome thing about website health is that Semrush will also show you the average website health of the top 10% of websites on the Internet. There is also a drop-down list to select an industry and view the average “website health” of that particular industry website.

This provides background information for the score of any site and allows you to show anyone the main results of their review and the benefits they must earn.

Of course, you can also create separate projects for specific competitors and compare the overall results to show a more detailed comparison.

The easiest way to export site audit results is to use the PDF button at the top right of the page.

Frequently Asked Questions about Website Health

How to interpret site health scores and topic reports on Semrush [Google Slides]

Can I directly affect my website health score by hiding/disabling any checks I want?

Yes, you can do this. We have implemented this feature so that you can freely disable checks that are not relevant to you. Like any other indicator, you can also influence this indicator.

Is the health of the website directly related to my ranking?

No, we recommend that you do not directly establish/sell connections between them.

On Page SEO consists of many different tasks, and when you combine excellent website health with other SEO efforts such as link building and content marketing, your rankings will usually improve.

There is no direct relationship between the technical quality of the website and ranking, because ranking occurs at the page level.

For example, if the page takes a long time to load, then this may become a negative signal for ranking the page.

No one wants to wait a long time to get information that can be quickly obtained from other pages. When the page is slow, your visitors will only leave.

What should I do when I reach 90% or higher?

The health of the website is based on many errors and warnings. However, notifications are not included in the calculation, but can indicate opportunities for further improvement.

In order to find new ideas that can be continuously improved, it is recommended that you check the following:

  • Special Report
  • Notice
  • Internal link report

For example, there may be an audit showing that the site is running at 90% and the internal link score rate is 70%.

Maybe the website’s link architecture is not good, and search bots can’t make it easy for users to find many pages. This is the reason to reconsider the internal linking method.

You can make changes to cause the page ranking to be scattered among the various pages of the site, thereby improving the ranking.

If Semrush implements other related issues-what will happen to the health of my website, what should I do?

After adding a new inspection, the influence of all inspections will be recalculated.

Therefore, sites with no new errors may start to have higher site health scores than sites with new errors detected by “site audit”.

We will recalculate the score and tell you what tasks you can perform to improve performance-especially when adding new checks, usually in response to SEO trends (some of our latest checks are about website speed and performance).

Although we always plan to make relevant updates and add new checks to the Site Audit tool in the future, new checks are not added frequently, so this will only have a small impact.

You can view the complete list of issues checked by the site audit Here.
