Mario’s firepower

A recent load of game theorists theorizing From Mario Secret Fire Power is a great example of the MatPat style. The video begins with a brief comic introduction. An old-school version of Mario, with the voice of MatPat, gains a firepower that he uses to defeat a mushroom opponent. In the introduction, Mario contemplates the ethics of using firepower or crushing his opponent. Mario is quickly shown to be wrong when using fire. The dying words of the mushroom opponents are, “Why couldn’t he die like my brother, Tony? He was crushed in an instant.” In the introduction, viewers can capture the comic sense and knowledge of MatPat about Mario.

The video goes to the opening sequence which can be seen in several videos from The Game Theorists. The sequence puts you in the place of a game enthusiast. Music and graphics attract the viewer. The music is upbeat and can be easily used as background sound for the game. The graphics follow paths and open doors to bring the audience to the main part of the video. In addition, the sequence uses characters and backdrops from the game.

In this video, MatPat delves into three pertinent questions about Mario’s fireballs. The questions are, “What can be set on fire?”, “What bounces off the ground?” and “What burns underwater?” Here we see the common trend of MatPat applying logic to the illogical. Through the 14-minute video, MatPat deconstructs the fireballs using diagrams of chemical compositions. Finally, MatPat arrives at the formula projected for Mario’s fireballs. The conclusive formula is aluminum powder, ammonium perchlorate and silicone rubber. The formula is comparable to rocket fuel for spacecraft.

The drawing of theories presented by MatPat does not come from its conclusions, but from the stories and the means to reach them. MatPat prepares its videos for a wide audience, not just game enthusiasts. His ability to deconstruct the themes of his videos is what makes him successful.
