As a token of power, the MLAs supporting Sidhu were taken to the temple in luxury buses.
Earlier, as many as 62 MLAs gathered at the Amritsar residence of Navjot Singh Sidhu, the newly appointed chairman of the Punjab Congress.
According to his office, Sidhu had called the party’s MLAs before breakfast.
Amarinder Singh’s media adviser had said in a tweet yesterday: “The Chief Minister will not meet with Sidhu until he publicly apologizes for his personally derogatory attacks on social media against him.”
The MLAs at Sidhu’s residence said the party is united and no apologies are needed.
In favor of Sidhu, Congress MLA Pargat Singh said, “Why should Sidhu apologize (to CM)? It is not a public issue. CM has not solved many problems. In that case, he should also apologize to the public.”
MLA Madan Lal Jalalpur said: “I am confident that the 2022 elections will be won by Sidhu. CM’s advisers are misleading him. This is causing Punjab to deteriorate.”
“On the day Sidhu was appointed chairman of the Punjab party, about 5 percent of the vote for Congress increased. The young people who left Congress and joined the AAP party came back because of this. I’m sure that at least 20 percent of the vote for Congress will increase because of Sidhu,” he added.
Jalalpur also said that the party and the CM must work together to be successful. Referring to the tweet from Punjab CM, he said Sidhu should not apologize because it is the duty of a CM to address the concerns of people of his state even if it is against him.
“Sidhu is not just Sidhu anymore; he is the president of the Punjab Congress. He has nothing to apologize for. Although, yes, Sidhu should respect him as he is like a father to all of us,” he added ready.
