A top vaccine expert urges Americans to get the COVID-19 vaccine as the number of new infections fueled by the highly contagious delta strain continues to rise in the U.S.
“I think there’s no doubt we’re going to see a wave,” Gregory Poland of the Mayo Clinic said CBS 4 Minnesota Tuesday.
The doctor said he still wears a mask when in public when he is “in a busy scenario,” whether indoors or out.
He noted that Minnesota, like many parts of the country, is experiencing a rise in cases as delta continues to circulate, and he sees cases of serious illness and hospitalization among younger people.

“Don’t be fooled that ‘I’ve come this far and I’m OK.’ This is a very different variant. It will find you,” he told CBS 4.
“This virus will find anyone who is not immune,” he added.
Public health officials are increasingly concerned as new infections, hospitalizations and deaths rise while vaccination lags in the US.
The variant has become the dominant strain in the US as cases are increasing in parts of the country with low vaccination rates.
The current seven-day average for new cases is 26,306, an increase of nearly 70 percent from the week before, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Hospital admissions are also up about 36 percent from last week after weeks of decline.
