The “free Britney” movement has reached Congress with a pair of MPs introducing new legislation this week to protect the rights of the approximately 1.3 million Americans under conservatory, including pop star Britney Spears.
Rep. Nancy Mace, RS.C. and Charlie Crist, D-Fla., announced their FREE law Tuesday to give them under conservatory more options to petition a judge to replace their guardian and assign them an independent caseworker to monitor signs of abuse.
Lawmakers praised Spears’ courage to speak out against her conservatory and expose the broader issues of the legally designated guardianship affecting many outside Hollywood.

“She had an opportunity … to shine a light on these abuses with everyday Americans,” Mace said Tuesday during a virtual press conference, speaking in front of a pink Spears poster and wearing a “Free Britney” shirt. “Her situation is a nightmare. And if it can happen to Britney Spears, it can happen to anyone in this country.”
Spears recently gave a cool statement in court about the toll her 13-year-old conservatory has taken on body and mind, describing how she has no control over her money or medicine and was forced to take contraception against her will.

Crist said the legislation would establish much-needed federal safeguards to protect people from abuse and exploitation and implement greater transparency measures.
“Under the FREE Law, we would free Britney along with the myriad of seniors and people with disabilities who were abused and exploited by the broken system,” Crist said.

“There’s a lot that still separates us, but there’s one thing we can all agree is that Jamie Spears is a cock and he should [not be able to] make more decisions regarding his daughter, “Gaetz told the Los Angeles Times. She is almost 40 years old. She should make her own decisions, but you know what, this case should open our eyes to the broader abuses that occur in this system. “
