Syrian state media said Syria’s air defenses intercepted an Israeli strike in rural Aleppo, while explosions were also reported near Al-Nairab airport.
The attack took place late Monday night in the al-Safirah area of southern Aleppo, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported, also sharing alleged footage of the moment the ammunition was intercepted.
Other videos claiming to show the strikes are also circulating, with explosions reported near the al-Nairab airport in a suburb of Aleppo. Syrian officials have not confirmed whether targets have been successfully hit.
Tel Aviv has previously bombed the al-Safirah region, claiming to have operated facilities operated by Iran’s Quds Force. According to the Times of Israel, the last reported Israeli attack in the area came last September.
While Israeli officials rarely confirm such operations, IDF warplanes routinely rain missiles into Syrian territory on the pretext of targeting Iranian positions. In addition to Moscow, Tehran has supported Damascus in its fight against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS terrorists) and other jihadist groups.
The attacks on Aleppo come less than 24 hours after Iraqi militias claimed a US drone was targeted by a truckload of supplies in eastern Syria, as reported by the Associated Press and Syrian state media. Not confirmed photos and videos also came forward to show the aftermath of the strike. Although the Joe Biden administration has launched several airstrikes in Iraq and Syria since coming to power in January, the Pentagon did not confirm the operation on Sunday.
