Oakland City Council approves terms for As Howard Terminal ballpark and development over the team’s objections

Oakland City Council approved a proposed $ 12 billion journal Tuesday for A’s plan to build a waterfront ballpark and accompanying development at Howard Terminal, but it is unclear whether the A’s will continue to negotiate or walk away from the project.

Six council members voted in favor of the proposed journal, which included changes requiring affordable housing, tenant and anti-location protection and environmental measures. Councilwoman Carroll Fife abstained and Councilor Noel Gallo voted against the project.

Mayor Libby Schaaf, Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas and Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan said in a joint statement that the vote marks a “milestone in our mission to keep the A’s rooted in Oakland and build a world-class waterfront sphere that will benefit society for generations to come. ”

“Based on our extensive negotiations, common values and common vision, we believe that A can and should accept the terms approved by the City Council today,” they said.

The A’s did not immediately return a request for comment, but team president Dave Kaval said the term field was not possible.

“The current term field as it is constructed and its current language is not a business partnership that works for us,” Kaval said at the meeting. “Voting on something we have not been familiar with and have not had time to digest is a difficult thing for us. It’s hard to understand what it’s like a way forward. ”
