Syria says Israeli airstrikes target Aleppo . region

Israeli planes launched a number of missiles at targets near the Syrian city of Aleppo late Monday, Syrian state media said.

The official SANA news agency said Syrian air defenses had repulsed attacks near the town of al-Safirah, southeast of Aleppo. Syrian war analysts generally dismiss the military’s regular claims about interceptions as false, empty boast.

There were no immediate reports of casualties and damage or details of the target of the raids. However, the area once contained a production facility for Syrian regime missiles.

Video posted to social media showed a series of explosions in the area, while a video posted by SANA appeared to show a missile moving through the air as anti-aircraft fire was aimed at it.

The Israel Defense Forces did not comment on the reported attacks, in line with its long-standing policy of not confirming or denying its activities in Syria.

Aleppo is a large city in northern Syria, near the border with Turkey, and is an unusual – but not unprecedented – location for reported Israeli airstrikes. The last reported Israeli attacks in the area were in September 2020.

The IDF has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011 against Iran’s actions to establish a permanent military presence in the country and against attempts to transport advanced, groundbreaking weapons to terrorist groups in the region, mainly Hezbollah .

The pace of attacks has decreased significantly in recent months.

It is the first reported Israeli attack on Syria since early June, when attacks targeted air force positions near the village of Khirbet al-Tin on the outskirts of Homs, as well as a weapons depot belonging to the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.

The Israeli Air Force also struck targets in several regions of Syria, in the capital Damascus and in the provinces of Hama and Latakia. Eleven Syrian soldiers were killed in those attacks.
