A person was seriously injured in the Coromandel today after being hit by a car.
Police say emergency services were called to the accident on State Highway 2, in Karangahake, at around 12:30 PM.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency says State Highway 2 has been closed through the Karangahake Gorge, between Paeroa and Waihi, due to the crash.
Waikato System Manager Cara Lauder says detours for this route are significant and encourages people to postpone their trip whenever possible.
“The detour south takes motorists on SH2 south from Waihi to Tauranga, then to State Highway 29 across the Kaimai Range, State Highway 24 to Matamata, State Highway 27 to Tatuanui and State Highway 26 to Paeroa. Drivers coming from Paeroa take the same route, in the opposite direction,” she says.
“Northbound motorists coming from Waihi should take State Highway 25, exit onto State Highway 25A (Kopu-Hikuai Road) and then State Highway 26 between Kopu and Paeroa, with motorists coming from Paeroa taking the same route, in reverse .”
