TikTok has announced a range of new creative tools and initiatives as part Asia-America and Pacific Island Heritage Month, which is celebrated in the U.S. during May.
And given that the Asian community has been exposed to increased tensions in recent months, with growing violence on the rise, this year ‘s event is more important than ever in providing support and community around API users.
First, TikTok adds new stickers and effects that help users participate in the event and share stories about the API culture and community.
As he explained TikTok:
“Creating labels led Julia Yellow, a TikTok employee of Taiwanese descent, who was inspired to create stickers that looked beyond identity and celebrated different dimensions of API cultures. To highlight the Heritage Month API Label, open the labels tray after shooting and add them to the top of your video. “
Looking to further highlight creators in the API community, TikTok has also announced its introductory “TikTok Trailblazers API List”.
The list includes some of the most influential users of the platform:
“The North American community of API creators has recognized and nominated these individuals for their passion and commitment to creating content that connects and inspires. Our performers use their platform to educate, entertain and advocate for the API community. From a Korean vegan lawyer to a Polynesian firefighter, these creators every day they proudly present their API heritage authentically and creatively. “
TikTok will seek to further highlight their work throughout the month.
In addition to this, TikTok will also celebrate the broader API culture and trends The content of #WeAreAPI and #AsianTikTok contained on the Discovery page, which will also link TikTok users to a TikTok LIVE programming schedule that includes API creators and artists.
Finally, TikTok will donate $ 275,000 to nonprofits working to fight racial equality and justice, and providing programs and resources to local API communities.
Again, given the current climate and the rise of attacks in Asia, it’s probably more important than ever for people to participate in the celebrations and show their support for the API community.
The new features will be available in TikTok from May 1, and programming will be scheduled throughout the month.
