We are pleased to announce plans to define a remote and personal approach to working as part of us (evolution) to become the best workplace.
Becoming a distributed team
When the closure restrictions began in the UK in March 2020, we were forced, like everyone else in the country, to quickly switch to a completely distant company. We locked our office, headed home and into the unknown. Despite the usual challenges and leavingrning curves, we have become a productive, successful and happy team that works completely from home.
During this time, we have also hired fantastic people, many of whom do not live in our hometown of Nottingham. Thanks to the fact that we have all been completely distant, each of them has quickly achieved a huge impact with the same equality and freedom as our others. In some ways, teleworking has become a great equalizer, where everyone can develop equally, regardless of location.
Today, about 15% of the Agency is completely far away, including one director and several senior experts. Hallam has changed forever and one thing is clear: we cannot and will never return to being an office-centric company. But we also learned that teleworking is not for everyone and that the future of work, at least for us, must be flexible.
The planet has changed irreversibly and we are evolving with it. And that requires a new way of thinking.
As national lock restrictions start to ease in the UK and we start planning to reopen our Nottingham office, we face a new challenge: how can we enable every Hallamer to be happy, successful and valued, no matter where they are? This question and the answers that will emerge in the coming weeks and months will be at the heart of our strategy for what we call equity of the location.
By adding the ability to hire the best talent, no matter where you are, we open up a global pool of talent that supports our journey to become one of Europe’s leading strategic digital agencies.
This is too important to be left to chance. We need to deliberately design a workplace that suits everyone, be it completely remote, fully office-based or a hybrid of the two.
Future of work: Location capital.
Our vision for the future is to achieve Location Equity: to be a company that finds the best people, no matter where they live, and gives them the best job they need. We still have an office in Nottingham and you can still come in every day if you want, but you don’t have to be in the office to be successful or satisfied at work. It’s just an opportunity.
The next time you navigate, we need a mix of courage and humility, based on a willingness to experiment. Everything we try will not work, but we are committed to continuing until we get that right.
We have created a working group that together creates a new framework for dealing with Hallam telecommuting and integrating local and remote teams into one clear, cohesive entity, regardless of physical location – from simple things like meetings and social events to how we work strategically and with clients. The team consists of a diverse Hallamers group – completely remote, hybrid and completely local in the office. Together, we work together to find ideas and policies that give us all the tools and freedom to succeed.
Three simple principles
Our strategy is based on three principles:
- Work from anywhere: everyone has the right to work wherever he wishes. We are not completely far away and not fully located in our Nottingham office. Every decision, policy or process that our agency makes must take into account the needs of both local and teleworkers and strike a balance to always meet the needs of both. It is a progressive strategy based on compromise and balance.
- Freedom to choose: the choice of place of residence and employment must always be a matter for the individual, not the company. While some prefer to come to the office every day, others prefer to work completely remotely and there are those who want a mix of both. Every company’s decision must take into account the individual’s right to choose. We also separate your career progression from where you work, giving you the confidence that you can achieve whatever you want, no matter where you live. You don’t have to sit next to an older person to progress.
- Cultural unity: every Hallamer is an equally important part of our culture. Every decision must take into account the impact on culture, cohesion and social elements. No one should ever be excluded because of their location.
Although work is an integral part of our lives, we believe it is not the only purpose of life. We truly believe that everyone should have the opportunity to be happy at work. There should be work to make home life better, not the other way around.
As an independent agency, we have the opportunity to create a work environment that promotes a healthy and balanced approach to work, starting from where you choose to log in. We have the freedom to choose and we will make the most of it.
